As a student, by default they are limited to working no more than 20 hours per week, this is to protect their studies and to ensure that working is not distracting from their academic studies. Please refer to our GTA framework principles here for more information on student involvement with teaching. Students can request to increase their weekly limit depending upon their study mode and circumstances, including any visa restrictions. Please check our Visa & international student advice here for advice on working in the UK.
How to work more than the 20 hours per week limit
For PhD students only: Are limited to working no more than 20 hours per week, and 312 hours a year.
If they are a fulltime PhD student and would like to work more than 20 hours per week, please follow these steps:
1. Provide Kings Teachers Help Team with a letter from the PhD supervisor, in PDF format to approve the working more than 20 hours per week and that this work will not have any impact on their studies.
2. The Help Team will update their King's Teachers profile with the start and end dates of when they can work more than 20 hours per week.
If they are a part time PhD student and wish to work more than 312 hours per year, the hours that the student would like to work needs to be discussed with their PhD supervisor. The letter from their supervisor to King’s Teachers should indicate that they are a part time student and the maximum hours per year that they can work while continuing their studies.
For Undergraduate and Postgraduate Taught students: As an undergraduate or post graduate taught student, they are limited to working no more than 20 hours per week during King’s teaching dates (semesters). During holidays they are allowed to work full-time hours and so they can request to increase their weekly limit outside of the King’s teaching periods. If they would like to work more than 20 hours per week, outside of King’s teaching dates, please follow these steps:
1. Provide King’s Teachers Help Team with proof of their term dates.
2. They can get proof themselves by going online to Student Service Online here: I need to prove my term dates & course attendance [article KA-01922].
3. Please email the proof to kingsteachers@kcl.ac.uk.
4. The Help Team will update their King's Teachers profile with the start and end dates of when they can work more than 20 hours per week.
If they are a part time undergraduate or postgraduate taught student and wish to work more than 20 hours per week during term time, they should discuss the hours that they would like to work with their personal tutor or supervisor. They can ask for a letter from their personal tutor or supervisor to King’s Teachers, in PDF format, to indicate that they are a part time student and the maximum hours per week that they have agreed they can work while continuing their studies.
Please email the letter to the King’s Teachers Help Team at kingsteachers@kcl.ac.uk.
